Timing???

What method can be used to calculate the correct timing for a P200? It has a malossi kit, but if I set it to 19 deg as everyone seems to do on this bulletin board in barely gets over 60mph. If I put it back to 23 deg it runs well past 70mph.
But, there must be a way to calculate what the best setting is?

[:dance3:] Hi AP
I think it all comes down to what timing you are willing to run. I have a PX200 disc with a malossi 210 with matched altered head a 60mm crank, Taffspeed exhaust, standard upjetted carb(130 main jet). The timing is set to 18 deg as recomended by Taffspeed and the scooter flys, takes off at 60 in third and kicks**** 70 in fourth( have not had it past that as I am still running in ). I could put the timing to 23 deg but you risk a hotter run that may result in you holing your piston. I would check your jetting, also have a look at what exaust you are running. Hope this helps.[]

[:dance3:] Sounds like you are in the right area with your jetting if the plug is brownish as long as it is on the darker side ans not light brown you should be OK. The head will not affect the timing but if if it has not been altered to suit your kit the compression could be too high combined with 23 drg timing your barrel could start running too hot could pink hole the piston or even b*** the barrel and piston. I had a pinasco kit do that it welded the rings in the piston and shaged the lining on the barrel. For safety I would get an altered head if you do not have one, most tuninig places do them for the malossi kits I got mine from Taffspeed good price and all the advice you will need and I would retard the timing to at least 20 deg 23 deg used to be the old P200 setting when 4 star petrol was still available but with unleaded you should really run at no more than 20 deg and as I said Taffspeed suggest 18 deg It;s ok doing over 70 at 23 deg but I would think that at that setting withe the stuff ypu have on your scooter sooner or later it’ going to go bang. Good luck however you decide to run it.[]

[:dance3:] AP
What can I say, If the motor has done 2000 miles at that set up and the piston is still OK as they say if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, Just goes to show that not every motor is the same, you need to get the set up right to suit the indevidual motor.
Cheers[:dance1:]

Paulo,

Cheers for the info. I’m going to compromise and set it at around 20 degs and see how it runs. If it zips up to 75+mph as it does on 23 degs timing I’ll be happy, if not it’s going back to 23 degs.
By the way, this engine with all the mods and a pm exhaust has done around 2000 miles (including a couple of 200 mile runs) on 23 deg setting and when I stripped it down the piston and head looked like new!

Gonna blueprint the cylinder next and maybe lower the exhaust ports a little and see what happens…

Thanks Paulo,

I’m running a 57mm crank, standard malossi 210 kit, 30mm carb with reed block (138 main jet), crank cases opened etc.
Plug is brownish to slightly rich colour.
I guess I shouldn’t worry if it runs ok on 23 degs, but seems contrary to everyone elses setup.

Will the cylinder head influence the timing?

[:bounce:] Sorry nearly forgot check the plug to see if you are running weak[:dance3:]
