Running in

Hi, just fitted a new cylinder/piston and rings on a PX. Vespa say to run in for 600km but SIP say only needs 1 hour. Why such a difference?

Hello paulrich,

cylinders without nicasil finish have to run 500-600 km. If you´ve got a cylinder with nicasil finish so it`s round about one hour. The information from Vespa is correct.

Kind regards

Mario SIP

If you want to do a classic running in for a iron cast cylinder so it's 1.000 km to be honest.

People always tend to tell you that you don't need it because it sounds uncomfortable... but if you want a reliable long Lasting engine it's mandatory to do a running in.
Don't Forget vespa engines with Iron cast cylidners are technical state of the art of the 1940's and so they have to be handled like your grandpa did it.

For a nicasil coated cylinder it's not so easy as nicasil is very wear resistant. The nicasil itself would not run in -it's thee piston whch has to be run in. My own observations of Nicasil Kits say that they Need much longer until you can say it has been runned in... I took off a T5 cylinder with only 2.000 km and I found the Piston nearly brand new...
