Modern engine in Sprint

Hi,

I’ve just put a rebuilt PX150 engine into my 1967 Sprint, with electronic ignition and the oil pump shut off. I’d be grateful for any advice about how, and how long I should run her in for.

Runs smooth so far, pretty quick too.

Thanks

KK

In the Indian owners book I got with my LML it says to run in at 45kmh for 2000kms, and when mates had English/Italian ones new it was 30mph for 1500miles, so it is factory recommendation, Personally i think you would be OK as it is a rebuilt old motor to try this; 30mph for 500miles, change oil. 40mph for 500miles & change oil then 50mph for 500miles then change oil. I would change the oil every 1000 (or 1500miles max) and go from there. Get a haynes manual they are better than the owners handbook. Use a good quality gearbox oil as well as a good 2 stroke oil, just make sure it is a common brand so you can buy it anywhere as you dont want to get stuck miles from home. I was caught out once, I use the best synthetic 2 stroke oil I have found but I ran out 100 miles from home once, I went to a village petrol station & asked for a synthetic oil, but he only had semi- synthetic, when i put it in the tank it re-acted with my original oil & formed a sticky goo like runny silicon, I had to strip the bike, drain the tank & flush it with clean petrol, strip the carbs & all fuel lines to blow out the gunge with an air line then start again with fresh fuel & oil. Wasted 11/2 tanks of fuel & took 3 hours (luckily there was 2 garages in the village, I stopped at the first and broke down at the second 3/4mile down the road.)

Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I agree about the not overrevving and the short trips, but 2000km to run an engine in seems like an awfully long time. Do you reckon this is really necessary, or is this just your preferred technique to make sure everything has bed in properly.
Thanks

Hi personally I would treat it like a brand new engine as most of the moving parts will be, take it at 30 mph for 1500miles or 50kmh for 2000kms depending on what speedo you have, change the oil at 500miles intervals till run-in and keep an eye on the plug colour, use the best 2 stroke oil you can find, and get regularly, so you can stick to one kind. Dont over-rev it in any gear and dont sit too long at 30mph in top but give it an occasional spurt. It takes time but it is better to run a motor in on short trips than long runs. Run it in around town in all kinds of traffic rather than plan a long trip and just hold it at 30mph for miles. You want to get the engine used to acceleration and going through the gears. Others may have different ideas but this works for me.
