Engine/Gearing set up for P2 with Sidecar - *Money No Object*

I am selling my :shoot1:Harley Davidson[:shoot2:] for around $30,000AUS. I reckon I’ll spend it up on putting a Cozy sidecar on my PX200EFL and put the rest on my mortgage.

What do you reckon would be the ultimate set up for hauling a sidecar?

I’m thinking something like a port matched Pinasco kit/long stroke crank set up.

I’m unsure about the exhaust. I have a really nice SIP Performer on another scooter, but will that kill me down low when I need pulling power at the lights?

Should I whack on a Sito+ to keep the low revs? If that’s the case, will an Abarth repro do the same trick but look cool?

What about gearing? Should I change the set up? Put in the SIP 5 gear set up?

I’d like to hear other peoples opinions on a ‚dream setup‘ for sidecar hauling!!

Cheers [:drink:]

Wahay, after reading this thread on Beerace’s pipe, I’m mighty interested… now I just have to sell the HD hahaha.

Sometimes this forum is just tops.

Could try astral planing it works for the buddists

Hi with the clutch I would do what the Germans do which is weld aband around the basket to stop it spreading and also dill and weld between the rivits that hold the basket to the clutch centre. I do this on all the 210 reed motors i build and it seems to work.
The malossi with a long stroke crank and lowered primarys would pull you up a mountain!
Matching the transfers is essential but don’t go too mad on the inlet-sometimes less is more!

where are you doc?

wiltshire in england

I’m really guessing here but the 225 Pinasco should be a good set-up for that.

As for the exhaust I’d stick with a standard or Sito+ job,Arbath’s are crap that are a visual improvement if you like that sort of thing.

As for the 5 speed 'box it’s still an unknown quantity from what I’ve heard so you may be better sticking with your standard 'box with a T5 4th.

They used to be shit hot but then they brought out a new piston that just used to break like the polini ones do.
A long stroke crank will give you more torque but the mazzeceli(not sure about spelling) cranks are weak. I have used them but had the pin welded to stop them twisting.
The thing about malossi’ is that they are mega reliable but you have to change the gearing to make use of the power. Another option is to buy a polini kit, junk the piston and get it bored to accept a malossi piston. This will give you quite a torquey motor.
The key for me is to be able to have a sidecar that will pull into the wind and up hills and for that you must have low gear set up.

Yeah I don’t know about these either.

sorry chaps i assumed that you being regulars on here you would have seen the thread for the dominator. ive built this setup in a mk1 p2 and the customer is over the moon with it. revs out in 4th during motorway use and pulls well on hills etc. i have a pipe in stock at revival scooters if you want it as beerace is still manufacturing so delivery may take a while. the doc

Might be a problem,I beleive BDS is in Australia mate.;D

I have a cozy sidecar on my px2 but it´s still a standard engine. It works Ok but it´s a bit slow in 4th gear.
I’m thinking something like a Pinasco kit and a long stroke crank set up to.
But what is the problem with the Pinasco pistons???

[:drink:]

Thanks for replying guys. I really need to do some research on this whole gearing thing. Do Malossi make a gearing kit to do this stuff?

Diablo, you seem to have some good ideas.

You reckon port match a malossi kit + matching head and then renegotiate the gearing? Any other factors to take into the equation?

I’m looking at going for a strengthened hydraulic clutch too.

if the dominator pipe isnt sold beforehand im taking it to santa pod wkend of 13th aug to sell.so if ya wannit call me at revival scooters

WTF is a b-race dominator pipe?!?!? Never heard of it. Can’t find anything on the net.

Take a look at this!

Id pull the engine to pieces and put a 68tooth primary in. What you gona be pullin in the sidecar? If its adults and big ones at that then this is essential for pulling 4th easily. You then have a choice of 20t 21t or 22t clutch gears. Bit of a lottery with pinasco pistons nowadays. With this gear set up it will pull mallosi all day at 65.
I’d like to see an in depth road test on the 5speed boxes with dyno graphs as well. Its a lot of money for something that SIP say they have tested for 800Kms.
Sito+ would be good for low down power but they rot. If money isn’t a problem it might be an idea to get a specialist to make one for the bike with lots of torque.

Yeah I’m starting to lean towards:

  • Conservatively port matched Malossi
  • long stroke crank
  • lowered primaries
  • reinforced hydraulic clutch set up

I have a few exhausts lying around too. Reckon a standard, a shito+ or an SIP Performer for this job?

Anything else I’ve missed?

a bloody good setup is malossi 210, b-race dominator pipe and a standard t5 gearbox and primary. pulls like a fookin train

just round the corner from me then
