On my PK, 6v, batteryless, why is it that my brake bulb bs each time I brake with the engine running? When I test it standing still it is OK, but as soon as it is on the road and it is having to actually do any work, the bulb bs.
If I rev the engine and use the back brake it b***s as if there is a surge of power to the brake light
A passing biker tells me that it may be down to one of two things:
bad earth or
faulty regulator
He suggested that the Ducati regulator was lousy and that a Honda H100 regulator would be a better alternative. Anyone ever tried this or another alternative?
Had a look at the PK125/PK125S operators manual, of which the PK125 is the same setup as the PK100S, e.g., a batteryless 6v. The PK125 doesn’t have a regulator, and what I thought was a regulator from pictures I had seen, was in fact the electronic unit.
I can now only assume the problem to be bad earthing. I will check this out over the weekend
Before you spend any dosh buying a new regulator, check the earth connection - this could have the same effect.
Check all the connections are tight, all screws or bolts holding the light to the frame are tight, anything nearbye is tight and give everything a good blast of WD40 or similar.
Dodgy earths in an auto electrics circuit can cause some whacky problems.
Though like others have said, an easy (and intermittent) fix could be a higher voltage bulb.
Yes it will be the stator. Use a 12v and whatever the highest wattage you can find is (prob around 20) and this should save you having to mess with the stator. This is a common problem (and a common solution) for un-regulated vespas.
I’ve got a 1966 180SS and the same thing was happening to me. I tried all sorts of things. I finally just put a 24V bulb in it 3 years ago. No problems since. Newark electronics (newark.com) has all sorts of bulbs in different voltages. I hope this helps.
The biker dude is right. Also check that your front park light bulb is not bn as they are usually on the same circuit so if one bs the other usually goes too. This especially applies to older (non-regulated) vespas.
The biker dude suggested that the Ducati regulator was flawed and that a honda h100 might be a direct and better replacement. He also aid that Ducati regulator was used in several vehicles, not just scoots - the fiat tempo was mentioned, however he said no-one uses that regulator now. Anyone know if the honda h100 is a good replacement?
