Hello from Chicago. I’d like some jetting advice for my 30mm DellOrto. My set up is: 177 Pinasco, ported, polished, matched; 30mm DellOrto on a Malossi reed block/manifold, inlet enlarged/matched. Worb5 special lip standard length crank, and a right exit JL. The main jet is a 138 and it seems way too rich. It’s been cold, snow-rain mix so I can’t get her out much to fine tune it. Chicago is roughly 200 meters above sea level. I will appreciate your expert comments. Oh yeah, the bike is an LML clone of a PX150E.

hello,
Keihin PWK 28 is one of my favourite! Extremely smooth and responsive. Much, much better then a PHBH dell’Orto.
Yes it will fit no prob. though you know the malossi rubber manifold is a little bit tricky and you need to wipe dry to fit the carb before and avery time if not the carb will tends to slip out.
it’s a pleasure,
just in case you get one PWK, this is the set up I could think would be close of what you need:
Main: 125 ( get a spare 122 and 120 ).
125 I think it will be too rich but it is better to start rich and go down. I guess at the end you will end up using a 120.
slow: 42 (get a spare 45 )
needle JJG (start with the clip 2nd position from top)
Valve cut away 4 (if they give you with a 3.5 for cheaper it is ok)
I use 130 right now but I think I have to go under, my setup is as follow
- PX150
- Malossi 166cc
- SIP Performance exhaust
- Dell’orto PHBH30
- Reed valves Malossi¨
- Airfilter Ramair
- Cylinder and the casings are ported together
- Dell’Orto Fuel pump but not mounted on my engine yet.
I have, just as you to wait because of the bad weather!
PS : How are the Bulls??
Thanks, Curare. Are you convinced that the Keihin PWK 28 with the:
Main jet somewhere around 120 to 125
Slow jet- 42 or 45
Jet needle JJG, 2nd position from top
Throttle valve cutaway- 4
Would solve my problems? Or at least be much smoother through the gears than the Dell’orto? Also, do you use a choke cable on the PWK 28? Or do you just use the pull knob?
I am sorry for all of the questions, but this Dell’orto is driving me nuts! And would you please review my earlier post so you can see what my motor set-up is. Thanks for all your help…
Sliphorn
Yes Curare, I will try the AV260 first. I too was told that the choke cable assembly from the 800 series (triple) Polaris snowmobile would work for the PWK. Excellent!
Sliphorn
…sorry, and for the keihin set up (in case you go for one) if they ask you more money with a slide 4, get a 3.5 but with this you need to use a JJH needle. It will work well too.
Thanks, my air filter is a Polini racing filter. A woven metal mesh type. You probably saw it in the photos of my bike. Is it okay?
Sliphorn
Curare, I’m going to order the PWK tomorrow. Thanks…

hello sliphorn,
it depends how you have mounted your dell’orto if with a bended guide or not.
But in case you need to change it you don’t have to change the complete throttle cable, just the inner metalic twisted cable, doesn’t cost that much.
I would buy it just in case because if when you are mounting the carb you realize you don’t have enough throttle cable you won’t be happy.
You should get also a solderless nipple to stop the cable at its handle bar sit. Screw it well and use loctite.
hello,
the keihin needl JJG is the „number“.
In this serie scale A is the richest (the smallest diam. and then B, C,D become gradually bigger so leaner)
Yes good idea, set the dell’orto first then you know that with the keihin can only be better.
Hello Curare. Well, I’m still fine tuning the carb. The motor does not pull smoothly through the gears. The idle jet was a 55, and I dropped it slowly, ending up with a 46. 2.5 turns out on the mixture screw. The English tuner Marc Broadhurst recommends 2.5 turns. It’s better than before but a little rich feeling from 1/8 to 1/4 throttle and from 1/2 to 3/4 throttle. When the 120 main kicks in, it is excellent, but maybe a little rich, which is okay because it is a new motor!. The needle is an AV262 in the top position. So…46 idle jet, 2.5 turns on the mixture screw, AV262 needle in top position, and a 120 main. Not bad, but not as smooth as I would like. Any ideas?
Thank you, sliphorn
Thanks Curare. Yes, there are alot of scooterists in Chicago. The scene is pretty big, and getting bigger all the time. Scooters are becoming very popular in Chicago, as well as many other places in the country. I see this as a good thing.

Hello Curare, no it is not too late. I’m getting really close to ordering the Keihin PWK-28 because I found out that an AV260 for my Dell’orto would be a little more than 30 dollars. And if it doesn’t help, then I wasted 30 dollars. Does the fact that the other Pinasco is a longstroke (190cc) make a difference in carburetion? Is he running a JL or similar chamber like me? So this guys motor is nice and smooth through all the gears with the PWK set up by you? Is it a 28mm? And does it have similar jetting to what you recommend for me? Sorry for all the questions, but I want to be sure about all of this. Please understand that I trust you, I show no disrespect.
Later this week I am going to a snowmobile shop to talk to them about a choke cable assembly for your PWK (and probably one for me too). I’ll keep you posted. I want to tell you that the information I get from you is excellent, and much better than any scooter shop that I know of. So, thank you again…

P.S.What elevation is it where you live?
Hi, today I dropped it down to a 125 main, with the needle in the 2nd position, which is how it came from the factory. It ran okay but seemed rich in the midrange. Then I put the needle in the top position and it helped a little, but it still seems rich. The mixture screw was 1 1/4 turns out. So I turned the mixture screw out to 1 1/2 turns, but that made it worse. Suggestions? Also, it is quite cold here, 30 degrees farenheit, and I’m not sure how that is affecting things.
One other thing, do you think a fuel pump is necessary for this set-up to prevent fuel starvation?
Thanks, sliphorn
Thanks curare, I’ll give it a go and let you know how it works out.
What do you think of the Keihin PWK 28? And would it fit on my Malossi manifold?

it’s a pleasure,

Main: 125 ( get a spare 122 and 120 ).
125 I think it will be too rich but it is better to start rich and go down. I guess at the end you will end up using a 122.

hello,
yes sliphorn you have got it right. The JJG with slide 4 or the JJH with slide 3.5 will be slightly different but both good…but now for the decision if you have to order one keihin with a certain set-up I would say to ask for it with:
Main 122 (spare 120 and 125)
iddle 40 (spare 38 and 42)
needle JJH
Slide 3.5
I think this is all you need to get it right.
PS: I have just seen the pictures you have sent on my e-mail. Are there a lot of scooterists in Chicago?
Curare, can I use the throttle cable from the Dell’orto? It is brand new.
Thanks, Sliphorn
